Where I'm at now

I did crack eventually. After the point, it was a roller coaster ride. When I first broke through the extinction period, I gave myself my first real bald spot. Now, a lot of it has grown back, my the top of my scalp is definitely thinner than it has ever been. I'm really self-conscious about it, and I've been trying to stop. There have been some successes and many more failures. Some of the things that I've tried are:

  1. Medical paper tape. The texture was enough to distract me and deadened my ability to feel for different types of hair. This technique worked for me for about 2 weeks before I thought I was fine on my own. I wasn't.
  2. Silly putty. I still use it in class to keep my hands doing something. It doesn't always work, but I'm a lot better with it than without it.
  3. Dumb bells. No joke. I use 2 lb dumb bells when I read sometimes to get my arms moving. The stress on the muscles helps to keep my mind off pulling.
  4. Bandanas. If I can get away with it, I wear a bandana when I'm feeling particularly stressed to make it impossible to pull my hair. I've only resorted to this a few times, but it really helped.
I'm considering trying liquid bandaids. My mom says that one of the kids she watches uses it to keep from biting his nails or something, so it might be a good idea for me to try.

Despite a lot of struggles over the past few months, I am currently 3 days free of pulling somehow. I'll take it.
